Honey
While you can use any honey to make these syrups, Manuka honey is known to have an anti-inflammatory action that can help reduce inflammation in the throat, which may contribute to cough relief. It also has potent medicinal properties and effectively treats sore throats because it has very high antibacterial properties from Methylglyoxal. This natural ingredient gives Manuka honey its distinctive taste, colour and smell. When Manuka honey is used in cough syrups, It helps to soothe irritated throat tissue and ease the discomforts of a cold. Beneficial Properties of Honey:

Homemade Cough Mixture
Ingredients
1 Onion
4 tablespoons Honey
4 tablespoons lemon juice
Directions
Finely chop the onion into small pieces, place into a clean jar and cover it with 4 tablespoons of honey, good antibacterial honey like Manuka Honey or Active Jelly-bush honey. Leave this mixture to stand for 3 to 4 hours and then add 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and mix thoroughly.
Dosage
For soothing a sore throat, Take 1 teaspoon of syrup as required. For those who prefer it a more potent, add a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger to the mixture and if you want to take a step further, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Remember to mix it in.
