Our Ketogenic Diet Is A Fat-burning Phenomenon
Not All Keto Diets Created Equal. Most keto diets promoted today do not take a holistic approach into account to reduce disease risk from a high protein and fat intake. We have spent years refining and developing our modified version of the ketogenic diet. The primary goal is to support and improve each individual’s overall health parameters who seek a weight loss program to support their well-being. Learn more about our modified keto diet.
How Does The Keto Diet Reduce Fat?
Expect to lose weight around day 4 of starting the diet as your body’s metabolism switches from using glucose as a fuel source to burning fat. The stored fat is broken down in a process called ketosis, the ketones produced are used by the body for energy. Once you are in ketosis, you are losing weight 24/7, even when you sleep. From my clinical observations, on average, patients lose between 1-2 kilos per week when they stick to our program.
Studies show that the ketogenic diet can preserve more muscle mass when compared to a low-fat diet. That means you will have minimal muscle mass loss in ketosis. Losing muscle mass is associated with poor health and fragility.
The Benefits Of A Keto Diet On Sleep and Anxiety
Benefits For Sleep
In addition to weight loss, the keto diet is going to promote sleep. When you adhere to a ketogenic diet, you may find you sleep deeper and more alert during the day. Another benefit if you are eating proteins like turkey and chicken. It is that they are high in the amino acid tryptophan, which is a building block the body uses to make:
- Serotonin – stabilising neurotransmitter promotes sleep duration
- Melatonin – helps with sleep onset.
Benefits In The Management Of Anxiety
The keto was originally developed to manage the brain health in epileptic children. It is worth mentioning that epilepsy is not a mental illness, with no signs of cognitive or psychological problem.
Studies indicate that a ketogenic diet may reduce inflammation in the brain with the production of ketones and as a result, improve brain function in chronic diseases like dementia and Alzheimers—PubMed ref. In 2018 a study showed that “Keto diet should be considered a promising intervention in research in mood disorder therapeutics” PubMed ref.
A ketogenic diet will over time:
- Increase the production of a GABA neurotransmitter that clams the brain has a calming effect on anxiety
- Act as a nerves system anti-inflammatory
- They make you calmer by reducing neurotransmitters that overstimulate the nervous system, like glutamates.
How Was The Keto Diet Discovered
The keto diet is the goto diet to lose fat. The original ketogenic diet was discovered by Dr Wilder, not as a treatment for obesity but to treat seizures in epileptic children who became therapy-resistant or could not take epileptic drugs in the 1920s. Dr Atkins, a cardiologist, was the first Doctor to use the Ketogenic diet to promote weight loss in the 1970s. ref. Ketogenic Diet
